Sustainability Forum Kicks off 2009 Summit
A highly successful forum on sustainability signaled the start of a series of activities leading up to this year’s VECCI Victoria Summit.
The event will build on the success of the 2007 Summit by focusing on the opportunities for business and policy makers to not only accelerate recovery from the recent economic downturn, but also build the foundation for Victoria’s future economic, environmental and social wellbeing.
The forum, Sustainability - Fostering Investment Innovation and Confidence, featured an interactive panel discussion with leading sustainability thinkers and practitioners including Sara Gipton (Chief Executive Officer, Greenfleet); Turlough Guerin (Group Manager, Environment, Telstra); Martin Jones (General Manager, Government Relations, CSR); Dave Plunkett (General Counsel, Qenos); Jon Ward (Manager, Environmental Policy, Toyota); and Frank Zahra (Executive Director, Pitcher Partners).
Panel and audience participation canvassed a range of issues surrounding this important subject including:
- Consumer trends towards more efficient and sustainable products.
- The benefits of investing in energy efficiency equipment to help lower overall production costs.
- The growing capacity of SMEs to take the lead in responding and adapting to climate change with new, innovative products and services.
- The importance of ensuring our education and training system keeps up with emerging CO2 reducing technologies and their application.
This was the first of several forums designed to engage experts and industry leaders with the aim of helping develop a new set of recommendations and actions to position Victoria as a leader in a low-carbon economy, now, and into the future.
