Why we developed this program
People with specific responsibilities for OHS need to have a level of understanding of their responsibilities and the mechanisms for delivering OHS programs.
This course bridges the gap between those who wish to understand more than is provided in the 5 Day OHS Course for Health and Safety Representatives and who cannot afford the time to take on tertiary studies in OHS.
This program is ideal for newly promoted OHS staff and is also a pathway for entry into the Diploma of Occupational Health and Safety (BSB51307)..

Who should attend
The Certificate IV in Occupational Health and Safety (BSB41407) is ideal for anyone who has the role of a Health and Safety Representative (HSR), Health and Safety Committee Member or an OHS Assistant or Officer who works under the supervision of an OHS Coordinator or OHS Manager.
Entry Requirements
Participants may enter this qualification through a number of entry points demonstrating potential to undertake vocational education and training at Certificate IV level, including:
- After achieving the Certificate III in Occupational Health and Safety (BSB30707) or other relevant Certificate III qualification; OR
- With extensive vocational experience in occupational health and safety roles.

Delivery Options
The training course is delivered over 7 full days of face-to-face delivery supported by on-the-job completion of activities and workplace project assessments.
- Block 1 Legislation, Hazards, Risks & Controls Strategies 2 days (14 hrs)
- Block 2 Consultation and Workplace Monitoring 2 days (14 hrs)
- Block 3 OHS Systems and Team Effectiveness 2 days (14 hrs)
- Block 4 Emergency Procedures, Identify and Apply Risk 1 day (7 hrs)
These workshops are typically separated by about 4 weeks in which the training can be applied at a workplace and evidence gathered in preparation for the assessments for each block.
Total face-to-face delivery is 49 hours. Participants will also be required to complete out of class activities and assessments taking approximately 381 hours.
Assessment
For the successful completion of this qualification, participants must complete a series of workshop and workplace-based assessment tasks. Assessment tasks must be submitted within six months of completion of each workshop. This program requires participants to undertake extensive self-directed learning in order to successfully complete the course. Participants should allow approximately 8-10 hours per week to complete the self-directed learning and assessment tasks.
Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) is available upon enrolment.

Eligibility for a Government Subsidised Place
To be eligible for a Government subsidised place, applicants must be:
- An Australian citizen or holder of a permanent visa: or a holder of a Special Category Visa (sub-class 444); or East Timorese asylum seeker; or a holder of a Temporary Protection Visa*; AND
- Aged under 20 years of age on 1 January in the year of course commencement; OR
- Aged 20 years or over on 1 January in the year the course commences, and you do not hold a prior qualification at the Certificate IV level or higher; AND
- Have not commenced or are not scheduled to commence more than two Victorian government subsidised courses in 2012 (excluding courses in the Foundation Skills Category); AND
- Are not currently enrolled in two or more Victorian Government subsidised courses (excluding courses in the Foundation Skills Category).
*Asylum Seekers (as confirmed by the Asylum Seeker Resource Centre ) and Victims of Human Trafficking (as confirmed by the Australian Red Cross) are exempt from the citizenship/residency criteria listed above.

Job Seeker Waiver
To be eligible for a course tuition fee exemption you must be a Job Seeker who is:
- Registered with an Employment Services Provider; AND/OR
- A participant in the Commonwealth Government's Community Development Program (CDEP) and/or Access Program.
Please note that if you are applying for a course tuition fee exemption, VECCI must sight and retain a copy of your original Job Seeker Referral Form and that a copy of this form will be sent to your referral agency upon enrolment.
Concessions
To be eligible for a course tuition fee concession, you must hold one of the following concession cards:
- Commonwealth Health Care Card;
- Pensioner Concession Card; OR
- Veteran's Gold Card.
