Initial 5-Day OHS Course for Health and Safety Representatives
One of VECCI’s Business Excellence courses
Approved by WorkSafe Victoria for Health and Safety Representatives (HSRs), this program provides the knowledge and practical skills needed to deal effectively with OHS issues and/or implement an effective OHS management process. Covering all major aspects of occupational health and safety, it comprises lectures, case studies and practical exercises that encourage active participation. Your attendees will gain an understanding on their OHS roles, functions and legal obligations, and be able to carry out their responsibilities with confidence.
Who should attend
Under section 67(1) (a) of the OHS Act, 2004, a HSR has the right to attend an initial course of training, with a provider of their choice, in occupational health and safety following election.
Additionally, this course is applicable for line managers, supervisors, safety officers, health and safety committee members, human resource officers/managers and anyone with responsibility for, or who has an involvement in, OHS.
What will be covered
- Understanding the modern approach to OHS
- Knowing the types of OHS legislation and standards
- Being aware of employer and employee roles and responsibilities, including Health and Safety Representatives and OHS committees
- Understanding OHS consultation and issue resolution
- Identifying hazards, such as manual handling, noise, asbestos, chemicals and falls
- Controlling risks
- Notifying and investigating incidents
- Conducting workplace audits and inspections
- Learning ergonomics and manual handling
- Being aware of psycho-social workplace issues, such as drugs, alcohol, bullying, occupational violence and infectious diseases
- Understanding the role of the Victorian WorkCover Authority/ WorkSafe
- Understanding safety management systems
