The 6-Day OHS Course for Managers and Supervisors has recently been developed by WorkSafe to provide Managers and Supervisors with the knowledge and practical skills needed to fulfil their duties and responsibilities under the OHS Act 2004, OHS Regulations 2007 and to provide a basic understanding of return to work requirements. This course deals effectively with OHS issue, the implementation of effective OHS management processes and covers the major aspects of occupational health and safety.

The Occupational Health and Safety Act 2004 (OHS Act) outlines specific employer responsibilities to provide and maintain a safe and healthy environment. In organisations, practical responsibility for ensuring these responsibilities are met is often delegated to managers and supervisors.

WorkSafe Victoria is strongly advising managers and supervisors to attend this course as, through lectures, case studies and practical exercises that encourage active participation, it will provide you with the information and skills required to identify hazards, implement control measures, consult with workers to resolve health and safety issues and assist injured workers successfully return to work. You will also gain an understanding of the OHS roles, functions and legal obligations of employers and will be able to carry out their responsibilities with confidence.

This course will also provide you with an understanding of the OHS Act 2004, OHS Regulations 2007 and part IV of the Accident Compensation Act 1985 (AC Act). It will give you an understanding of your role and legal responsibilities, help you understand the role and assistance other key workplace parties can provide and provide you with information on where and how to obtain assistance in dealing with hazards and dangerous situations. It will also provide you with an understanding of the role of occupational health and safety in the workplace and in the prevention of incidents, injury and illness.

Who should attend

This course should be attended by managers, particularly line managers, supervisors and safety officers who wish to further their knowledge, health and safety committee members, human resource officers/managers and anyone else with the responsibility for, or an involvement in, OHS.

What will be covered

This training course has been designed to supply the basic information and skills required by managers and supervisors to identify hazards, to implement control measures, to consult with employees to resolve health and safety issues in the workplace and to assist injured employees to return to work. You will gain an understanding of:

• The OHS Act 2004, the OHS Regulations 2007 and Part IV of the Accident Compensation Act 1985;
• Your role and legal duties;
• The role and assistance that can be provided by other key workplace parties;
• Where and how to obtain assistance in dealing with hazards and dangerous situations; and
• The role that OHS has in the prevention of incidents, injury and illness.
