ASEAN Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA)
The Agreement establishing the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) was signed in Thailand in February 2009 by Australia, New Zealand and the following ten member countries of ASEAN:
- Brunei
- Burma (Myanmar)
- Cambodia
- Indonesia
- Laos
- Malaysia
- Philippines
- Singapore
- Thailand
- Vietnam.
It has now been announced that Indonesia has finally taken steps to fully implement the AANZFTA with effect from the 10 January 2012.
This will allow for full implementation of the AANZFTA by all contracting parties, this should enable Australian companies to boost trade with the AANZFTA region.
AANZFTA provides for extensive commitments on the reduction and elimination of tariffs.
Obtaining ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) specific Certificates of Origin
Australian exporters need to take the following steps to obtain such certificates:
- Qualify for the preferential tariff rates by satisfying a Rule of origin (ROO) test.
Exporters are required to know whether an ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) tariff applies to their goods, as some will not require preferential tariff treatment

- Obtain and retain documentary proof of the goods’ originating status
If you wish to access preferential tariffs for your goods, they must qualify as originating Australian goods. (refer to Rules of Origin Guide)
- Become a ‘Registered Exporter’
Once you have confirmed that your goods satisfy ASEAN Australia-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (AANZFTA) rule(s) of origin, you need to become a ‘Registered Exporter’
- Obtain a certificates of origin for each shipment claiming preferential Tariff treatment
