The Backpacker Operators Alliance of Victoria (BOAV) has announced the election of a new Chair, Ms Kelly McCarthy.
Ms McCarthy is currently the Business Development Manager with YHA Victoria – a leading provider of backpacker accommodation in Victoria, and has an extensive background in the backpacker industry including a role with Adventure Consulting as well as firsthand experience of the needs of backpackers through her own extensive travel throughout Europe and Asia.
Ms McCarthy has a strong desire to promote industry development within the sector and pursue the concerns of members through policy and advocacy work.
“The backpacker industry is a valuable industry to the broader tourism industry and Victorian economy, and I look forward to assisting the industry to further grow through BOAV’s range of networking events, industry development agenda and policy and advocacy work,” says Ms McCarthy.
“I congratulate Kelly on her election and believe that her experience will hold her in good stead as she takes over the reigns as BOAV Chairman and I look forward to working with her to further progress the interests of the vibrant and valuable backpacker industry in Victoria,” says BOAV Executive Officer, Ms Anita Donnelly.
BOAV also announced that Mr Brad Holland will serve as Vice-Chair. Mr Holland is currently the Executive Director of IEP (International Exchange Programs), Australia’s leading working holiday organisation. Mr Holland has also had over seventeen years experience in working in the youth, tourism and marketing industries across Australia, the UK, USA and South Africa.
“I wish Kelly and Brad the best of luck with their new roles and look forward to working with them to further the interests of BOAV members”, says outgoing BOAV Chair Mr Dave Fitzpatrick.
“2009 has been a challenging year for the backpacker sector with the Global Financial Crisis, swine flu hysteria and the lingering effects of Black Saturday impacting backpacker numbers arriving in Victoria,” says Ms Donnelly.
“With Kelly and Brad, along with the valued input of our Board, I am confident we will be able to provide support and advice to BOAV members to assist them in achieving their business goals in 2010,” says Ms Donnelly.
