A warning from the Indian Ministry of External Affairs, cautioning students planning to study in Melbourne about recent racially-based violence against the Indian community members here is a blow to the tourism sector, says the Victoria Tourism Industry Council (VTIC).

“The warning says that students should take caution when travelling to Australia, in particular Melbourne, which they say “has seen an increase in violence on its streets in recent years”,” says VTIC Chairman, Mr Jeremy Johnson.

“The warning is disappointing and will hurt the Melbourne brand. While it is early days, this may flow also to the local economy, in particular, our tourism industry, which has been enjoying a growing visitor numbers from India.

“It is not a good day for Melbourne to be labeled as a trouble spot for Indian nationals and this will impact on our reputation for years to come unless significant law and order action is undertaken by the Victorian Government.

“Only quick and effective action such as increased  and visible policing - ‘walking the beat’-, tougher sentencing for those found guilty of such attacks, CCTV security cameras and an increased level of  security on our public transport  will begin  to repair the damage that has been done to our reputation in India.

“The police should also not telegraph their ‘stop and search’ initiative through advertising, but use the advantage of surprise.

“While the travel advisory has been issued in India, domestic and other international visitors and students may think twice about visiting Melbourne, which is not only disappointing but could cost jobs in the tour, accommodation and attraction industries.

“VTIC urges the Victorian Government to take swift law and order action to repair our reputation and build confidence among tourists that Melbourne is a safe, vibrant and exciting destination for tourists and students alike.” says Mr Johnson.
