Public transport – are cancellations costing your business?

The performance of Victoria’s public transport network has been under the microscope over the past week, but how are train delays and cancellations impacting on Victorian employers?

Newspapers, television reports and talkback radio airwaves have been full of stories about the performance of public transport provider Metro and the state of current infrastructure.

On 10 March 2010, Metro announced their latest performance results, which saw 16.6 per cent of services delivered late. Victoria’s Premier, the Hon. John Brumby MP said he was “disappointed” that Metro had failed to meet its targets as set out in their contract with the Government, while others have blamed the Victorian Government for failing to invest in upgrades to infrastructure.

VECCI has continued to call for ongoing investment in Victoria’s transport infrastructure to improve safety, reliability and efficiency for the business and general community. At the 2009 Victoria Summit, VECCI called for infrastructure changes such as the abolishment of level crossings and the upgrade of wooden sleepers on suburban railway lines.

While VECCI believes that ongoing infrastructure investment is important to our public transport requirements in the future, the impacts of delays and cancellations are hitting passengers and businesses now.

As VECCI continues to advocate for improved transport infrastructure with Government and Opposition, it is important to know how recent public transport performance has impacted on your business.
