While travel has been around for centuries, the internet as we know it is only 25 years old. In Australia alone, 64 per cent of households have internet access. Who is purchasing their travel online and how much are they spending?

On 12 March 2008 in Suites 1 & 2 of the Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre our esteemed panellists Paul Fairweather General Manager, Tourism Research Australia, Robyn Archer Artistic Director, 'Luminato' , Gregory Hywood Chief Executive Officer, Tourism Victoria and Roman Zwolak Senior Analyst, IBISWorld provided a thought provoking conversation on the performance and outlook for Victoria's tourism and events industry, audience participation was high and the resounding message of the day that the tourism industry needs to be responsive to consumers and sensitive to environmental issues.

SKILLS AND LABOUR SHORTAGE SOLUTIONS

The December 2007 VTIC Quarterly Industry Forum focused on growing the concern surrounding skill and labour shortages in Victoria. This is particularly apparent within the tourism and hospitality sector.

Panellists discussed how their organisations are handling this issue, from skilled migration to training and recruitment strategy. Audience participation was encouraged and there was plenty of opportunity to address attendees' specific questions and concerns.

September 2007

On 19 September VTIC hosted it's 3rd forum for the year entitled 'Tourism Investment in Victoria Myth vs. Realities'.

The audience heard Garry Crockett, Managing Director of The Crockett Group who are developing a $50M tourist facility on the edge of the Yarra River at Warburton and David Fetterplace, General Manager Planning at Meinhardt Infrastructure with 30 years experience in the planning, design and development of major tourism and infrastructure projects discuss whether Victoria is a competitive state for tourism investment, what is required for tourism investment to succeed and how your business can benefit from tourism investment.

The forum concluded with canapés from Bokchoy Tang and wine tasting courtesy of the Victorian Wine Industry Association.

June 2007

Over 120 tourism industry colleagues attended the VTIC Industry Forum Green With Tourism EnvyTourism's adaptability to climate change on Wednesday, 6 June 2007 at BMW The Edge, Federation Square.

The keynote speakers were:

  • Nick Rowley - Former Senior Policy Adviser on Sustainability and Climate Change to British Prime Minister Tony Blair
  • Peter McCormack - Health, Safety and Environment Manager, Virgin Blue and
  • Kate Nicolazzo - Program Director, Grow Me The Money.

The June VTIC Forum outlined the importance of capturing the business of carbon-conscious customers, how tourism businesses can reduce their impact on the environment while increasing profits, focused on issues and solutions for Victoria's tourism industry in adapting to climate change and practical solutions for all tourism based organisations.

The VTIC Forum also included an open panel discussion chaired by VTIC CEO, Wayne Kayler-Thomson, who also presented the results from the latest VTIC Quarterly Survey of Tourism Performance and Outlook and provided an update on VTIC's recent activities.

Following the presentations, guests had the opportunity to network and sample a glass of wine from the Heathcote region, proudly provided by the Victorian Wine Industry Association.

April 2007

The April 2007 VTIC Quarterly Forums focused on International Markets and Events – their significance to Melbourne and Regional Victoria; the relationship between international markets and events, changes in the marketplace and issues and trends affecting international tourism generally.

Each speakers represented organisations directly engaged with both the Events Industry and International Markets and outlined the value of international markets and events to Victoria, challenges and opportunities associated with standards and excellence, infrastructure and Government resourcing.

Speakers included:

  • Peter Abraam, Victorian Major Events Company
  • Melanie De Souza, Tourism Victoria
  • Patricia Griffiths, VECCI International Trade

The Forum also included an open panel discussion chaired by VTIC CEO, Wayne Kayler-Thomson, who presented the results from the latest VTIC Quarterly Survey of Tourism Performance and Outlook.

December 2006

The final VTIC Industry Forum for 2006 was held on the 13th December 2006 at BMW The Edge, Federation Square. Speakers included:

  • Jeremy Johnson, CEO, Sovereign Hill Museums Association
  • Kate Brennan, CEO, Federation Square
  • Patrick Greene, CEO, Museum Victoria

The December VTIC Forum outlined the value of major attractions and venues as catalysts for increased visitor number dispersal and yield to destinations, regions and cities. Jeremy Johnson focused on the impact of Sovereign Hill to the tourism market and visitation to Ballarat and the Goldfields Region, Kate Brennan presented an overview the impact of Federation Square as a major visitor hub for Melbourne and regions and Dr Patrick Greene outlined the value of major cultural attractions to Victoria's tourism brands, visitation and business development.

The Forum also included an open panel discussion chaired by VTIC CEO, Wayne Kayler-Thomson, who also presented the results from the latest VTIC Quarterly Survey of Tourism Performance and Outlook and provided an update on VTIC's recent activities.

Following the presentations, guests had the opportunity to network and sample a glass of wine from a Victorian region, proudly provided by the Victorian Wine Industry Association.

June 2006

Our last industry forum was be held on the 20th June 2006 at BMW The Edge, Federation Square.

Topics Included:

  • THE VICTORIAN TOURISM OUTLOOK
    Our industry is constantly changing. VECCI Executive General Manager, Wayne Kayler-Thomson, will provided results of the VTIC Industry Survey for the current quarter coupled with a timely review on where our industry is positioned, current trends and impediments going forward. Copies of the survey report were made available during the presentation.
  • VICTORIA'S AVIATION INDUSTRY – ITS NOT ALL BLUE SKIES!
    The aviation industry is changing and the accommodation industry is becoming ever more reliant on flight movements in and out of Melbourne Airport. Geoffrey Conaghan delivered a candid update on recent changes, forecasts and results. Michael Reed provided an update on Air New Zealand, its activities into Melbourne and the future for the Trans-Tasman route.
  • PANEL DISCUSSION:
    Wayne Kayler-Thomson, VECCI's new Executive General Manager and former Tourism Victoria Deputy CEO, led a panel discussion on Aviation, Tourism and the VTIC Survey. Jeremy Johnson, Melbourne Airport's Geoffrey Conaghan and Air New Zealand's Michael Reed discussed key issues and respond to questions from the audience.

February 2006

VTIC held its first forum for 2006 at Federation Square on 9th February.
