Results of VECCIs Victorian Skills Survey are now available, with critical findings on the labour market in Victoria and the challenges ahead for industry, government and the community. VECCI undertook the survey to understand the extent to which skills shortages were impacting on Victorian industry.
The results have in part confirmed what we already knew – that employers are finding it difficult to recruit skilled workers, and that this is impacting on productivity and the wider economy.
The implications are clear that unless we are able to increase the supply of labour with the skills required by industry, productivity growth will be constrained and the economic achievements made by Australia will be put at risk.
Changes in our approach to recruitment, managing older workers, and improving our Vocational Education and Training system are vital to ensure all employers and the wider community are able to manage the impact of the ageing of the workforce and the shrinking supply of labour in the decades to come.
