AusLink to boost efficiency and growth
6/7/2004 4:02:18 AM

The Federal Government's new land transport plan, AusLink, will lead to increased transport efficiency and economic growth, says VECCI.

"AusLink represents an attempt to strategically plan Australia's land transport future", says VECCI Chief Executive Officer, Mr Neil Coulson.

"It seeks to establish national priorities, identify key national transport corridors and considers road and rail together with their relevant intermodal connections, for example sea and air transport.

"This will hopefully take some of the politics out of road funding considerations and rebalance priorities towards economic imperatives.

"Today's announcement indicates funding for key projects identified by VECCI, including the Geelong, Pakenham and Deer Park bypasses, the Calder and, tentatively, Goulburn Valley Highway duplications and the replacement of Murray River bridges.

"It also recognises the strategic significance of the Port of Melbourne, by seeking to improve road and rail links into the Port.

"The infrastructure commitments to Victorian projects will be of great economic benefit and should hopefully provide the impetus for a high level of co-operation between State and Federal Governments to get key projects completed", says Mr Coulson.
