Today’s announcement by Qantas and Jetstar of an expansion of services by budget airline Jetstar International represents a major boost to Victoria’s tourism and hospitality industries, says the Victorian Tourism Industry Council.
Melbourne-based Jetstar will begin three new international routes from November 2006, flying from Melbourne to Bangkok, Honolulu and Bali.
Jetstar’s Melbourne operation currently employs around 1,300 people and most of the 550 new jobs from today’s announcement will be Melbourne-based, not to mention many more indirect jobs in airline support industries such as maintenance, professional services and catering.
VTIC Chairman Jeremy Johnson says this investment builds on our success with the Commonwealth Games and will enhance Melbourne Airport’s status as Australia’s premier domestic air hub.
"Melbourne is the most progressive, innovative and successful major airport in Australia and it is also the only major airport without a curfew.
"Melbourne has also added many direct international flights in recent years, and is strongly placed to become an alternative international gateway to Australia, as it does not have the aircraft and traffic congestion problems that plague Sydney’s airport", says Mr Johnson.
