The Victorian tourism industry has welcomed today’s State Budget initiatives.
"Given the impact of recent bushfires, fuel prices rises and an interest rate rise, the measures announced in today’s Budget will provide a boost to tourism", says VTIC Chairman Jeremy Johnson.
"In this Budget, the Victorian Government announced further funding for tourism promotion, including $50 million over four years for attracting major events including the World Cup, $8 million over two years for attracting business events and an additional $12 million over four years for a Marketing Melbourne and Victoria campaign.
"This increased funding comes at a critical time for the industry, as we seek to capitalise on the opportunities provided by the Commonwealth Games. The tourism industry in Victoria has enormous potential for growth, and a strong state-based marketing strategy is essential to its long-term future.
"Twenty seven million dollars have also been allocated to support tourism, including investment in regional marketing, tourism signage and tourism skills, and a Provincial Pathways program to create new rail trails and walking tracks - promoting regional dispersal of tourists will help offset the disproportionate impact of rising fuel prices on regional Victoria.
"The focus on cutting payroll tax, land tax, WorkCover premiums and red tape will also assist tourism operators, large and small alike - we commend these initiatives by the State Government.
"Going forward, it is vital that the State Government help secure more direct flights into Melbourne, as this will help cement Victoria as a tourism destination of choice. Melbourne’s 24-hour, curfew-free airport makes Melbourne the natural entry point into Australia", says Mr Johnson.
