The appointment of John Brumby as Premier of Victoria will be welcomed by business, says VECCI.
“VECCI in particular and business in general have a good working relationship with John Brumby and look forward to working with him in his new role”, says VECCI Acting Chief Executive Officer Wayne Kayler-Thomson.
“Having held the portfolios of Treasury, Innovation and State and Regional Development, Premier Brumby understands key economic issues pertaining to business, ranging from fiscal management, State taxation, WorkCover costs, skills and labour issues, trade and industry policy, infrastructure requirements and balancing the economy and the environment.
"Perhaps the key challenge for the new Premier will be keeping Victoria's economy competitive in the face of fierce overseas competition, global warming, skills shortages and a high Australian dollar, as well as providing key infrastructure for a State where an extra million people will be living by 2030.
“In particular, we hope the new Premier will be able to progress key projects such as channel deepening in Port Phillip Bay and the East-West link.
“Premier Brumby also has the depth of experience to represent Victoria on the national stage, and will be able to seamlessly take over from former Premier Bracks, who showed national leadership at forums such as the Council of Australian Governments (COAG).
“Business has also worked closely with new Deputy Premier Rob Hulls during his terms as Minister for Industrial Relations, WorkCover, Planning and Manufacturing Industry and we look forward to continuing the good working relationship”, says Mr Kayler-Thomson. |
