The approval of the Port Phillip Bay channel deepening project by Environment Minister Gavin Jennings is another positive step in the process towards a more efficient Port, says VECCI.
“This approval follows the approval given by Planning Minister Justin Madden in October 2007 and represents an early Christmas present for Victorians”, says VECCI CEO Wayne Kayler-Thomson.
“This is because timely approval of the project means that Victorians and other port users will avoid the cost of delays, which include increased project costs, more expensive goods, constricted exports and job losses.
“The conditions on the Port, including a bond, represent a responsible `belt and braces’ approach that will minimise environmental impact while maximising economic benefit.
“The Port Phillip Bay Channel Deepening Project is Australia’s most important infrastructure project, as the Port of Melbourne handles 40 percent of Australia’s shipping containers,” says Mr Kayler-Thomson. |
