The Victorian Government’s decision to roll out new smart water meters to Victoria’s top 200 water users is welcomed, says VECCI.
“This announcement shows that technology has a crucial part to play in saving water”, says VECCI Chief Executive Officer, Neil Coulson.
“In short, while industry is a relatively small user of water, we believe we have our part to play, and technology such as smart meters will help us do this.
“Like households, who deserve to be congratulated for their practical water-saving measures, industry has been saving water and plans to do more.
“The top 200 Victorian water users have reduced their water usage by 13% since 2001/02 – that is by 6 billion litres of water.
“In Melbourne itself, the non-domestic sector has reduced its water consumption by approximately 25 percent since the late 1990s, slightly better than Melbourne's overall reduction of 22 percent per capita since the mid 1990s.
“This goes to show that being a big user of water does not necessarily mean you are an inefficient or wasteful one, especially when you are responsible for employing thousands of Victorians and provide goods and services used by Victorians”, says Mr Coulson. |
