Today’s announcement of Melbourne as the new Australian headquarters for low-cost airline Tiger Airways represents a major boost to Victoria’s tourism and hospitality industries and an endorsement of the State’s major events strategy, says the Victorian Tourism Industry Council (VTIC).
This announcement will lead to 1,000 jobs for Victoria, as well as indirect jobs in airline support industries such as professional services and catering.
VTIC Chief Executive Officer Wayne Kayler-Thomson says that Tiger’s decision is a vote of confidence in Victoria’s major events strategy, which ensures a steady flow of visitors to the State throughout the year.
“The Victorian Government is to be congratulated for continuing to support major events in this week’s State Budget at a critical time for the industry when other cities such as Sydney are seeking to copy the Melbourne model”, says Mr Kayler-Thomson.
“The Tiger Airways investment will also enhance Melbourne Airport’s status as Australia’s premier domestic air hub.
"Melbourne’s distinct advantages as a location for an airline headquarters will provide Tiger Airways with a domestic base from which it can operate a competitive service.
“Melbourne is the most progressive, innovative and successful major airport in Australia and it is also the only major airport without a curfew”, says Mr Kayler-Thomson.
