The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games’s win at last night’s Confederation of Australian Sports Awards further cements Melbourne’s place as Australia’s sporting capital, says the Victorian Tourism Industry Council (VTIC).
The Melbourne 2006 Commonwealth Games received Australia's Sports Tourism Event award at last night's Confederation of Australian Sports Awards, held in Melbourne.
Games Organisers accepting the award recognised the efforts of the Victorian Government, Tourism Victoria and the Victorian Tourism Industry Council (VTIC) in co-ordinating the extensive and successful tourism marketing program associated with the Games.
VTIC co-ordinated ongoing industry forums and workshops as far as 3 years out so all sectors of the industry were kept informed of the Games.
"In many ways the 2006 Games established a blueprint for event tourism marketing," says VTIC Chief Executive Officer Mr Wayne Kayler-Thomson.
"For the 12 days of the Games, Melbourne was showcased internationally and Victoria had an additional 120,000 visitors."
"Major events are very important to the Victorian economy and the success of the Games highlights the need for continued development of events infrastructure and adequate funding for key agencies such as Tourism Victoria, the Victorian Major Events Company and the Melbourne Convention and Visitors Bureau.
“To this end, a new Victorian Events Industry Council is being formed as a partner organisation to VTIC to help ensure that Victoria’s events competitiveness is maintained from an industry point of view”, says Mr Kayler Thomson.
